Pyengana was a small in dairy town. Is claim to fame – a cheese producing factory that has won Tasmanian and Austrailian Cheese awards. Of course we had to check it out given the company we keep who feed us exotic cheese. Alas it wasn’t any where near as good as the treats we get from overseas – thanks Sonia and Bruno!
We stayed in the Pyengana Recreational Grounds with cheap showers and a beautiful outlook into the mountains. Further up the road was the Pub in the Paddock. Famous pub which dates back to the 1880’s and does a great trade from what we could see Sunday lunchtime! A good old Parmigana with veg and chips with gravy went down a treat!

A short distance up the road was Columbia Falls. It is a 30 minute walk into the viewing platform through the rainforest and ferns. Beautiful on a warm summers day. We also visited Ralph Falls which was an interesting trek in itself getting into as we had to follow a windy road up the mountain where they have been tree felling.
A 20 minute walk into Ralph Falls reveals an amazing view across the Oxberry Plains and Mount Victoria Forest Reserve. You could actually see in the distance the Waterhouse Conservation Area we had been staying at recently.

We followed the twisting winding gravel road down into Legerwood stopping at the wood sculptures. The trees had been planted after WWI for the local solders who had died. In recent years the trees had deteriorated and were to be cut down by the counsel. Locals raised funds for a local Tasmanian sculpture who spoke with the families related to each tree and he created the sculptures. Was a random site along our route back to Pyengana but one worth visiting.
