Bloomfield Track

The Bloomfield Track is one of the most scenic short 4WD drives in Queensland and a must-do for 4WD travellers although these days it is more of a graded road than a true 4wd track. The Track's construction in 1983-84 led to the Bloomfield Blockade, one of Australia's most important environmental protests. The area now has World Heritage protection.
Leaving Palm Cove we headed north to the Daintree area crossing on the Daintree Ferry and then through the rainforest onto the track. The road is graded from time to time so it isn't full of major corrugations. There are also sections which are sealed due to the gradient that is to be travelled up or down - 20-30%. The road has a number of small river crossings some which were still running and others which were dry. The track does not have many viewing points along the way of the ocean as the rainforest is very thick. Heading south there is one vantage point for a view out across the mountains. The track goes all the way up to Wujal Wujal which is an aboriginal community. Here there is an art centre where they paint and also design jewellery which is for sale at reasonable prices. You also pass through the Daintree Tea Plantation which was looking lush.
The track itself is pretty winding through the rain forest but not as exciting as we had hoped! We were joined on the day trip by Trent's parents - Des and Kath and sister Alana. We stopped into the Daintree, Wujal Wujal, Bloomfield River boat ramp for lunch and then into the Bloomfield Falls.
We were lucky enough to also spot 'Big Daddy' the Croc again and also see a Cassowary and its baby. They were also harvesting sugar cane which we have not seen so far on this trip. The trip is pretty but to be honest a little disappointing from a 4wd point of view.
