Leaving our prestine beach camp spot of Boat Harbour Beach, we headed inland to visit the caves at Gunns Plains and Leven Canyon.

Gunns Plains Caves were discovered during a hunting trip in 1906 when a man followed a possum into the Caves by candle light.

There are 54 steep stairs to get down into the Caves but it’s worth it!  The Caves are a warm 11 degrees so a jumper or jacket are advisable. You will get to see bacon and a wedding cake and a cathedral plus some glow worms. Adults $17 with a family $25, children $7 and concession $14.

The Caves are fully guided, run by a family on behalf of Parks and Wildlife. If you are lucky you may spot platapus or fresh water lobsters in the creek running through the Caves.

The Caves have been flooded so if visiting in the wetter months where it has been raining heavily, be sure to check to ensure the Caves are open for a visit.

Leven Canyon is a 30 minute drive from the Caves. Great place for freecamp if and also a picnic!  If you have come to view the Canyon, follow the track to the right. It’s about 500m to the top for the Black Bluff Lookout. It is a steady up hill climb with nice seats telling you how far is left to go!

Once at the top the view is breathtaking. Looking out over the bluff and down into the Leven River gorge. Follow the 687 stairs down the hill and through the Ferny walk back to the car.
