Leaving Carpenter Rocks, we discovered the Windfarm Tourist Drive on the outskirts of Tantanoola heading towards our next destination Robe.

These huge wind turbines dominate the Woakwine Range. There are approximately 135 turbines (23 at Canunda and 112 at Lake Bonney). They generate about one eighth of South Australia’s electricity or 500megawatts per annum.

Each turbine costs around $4.2 million, weigh 6 tonne without the rotor and blades -23 tonne with - blade span of 33 meters and are 100 meters from the ground. Each turbine has a foundation weighing 700 tonne below the ground. One turbine produces enough electricity to power 1,100 homes.

The wind farm runs for 8km and is 3 km wide. At Canunda, the 23 wind turbines are the largest installed in Australia with a blade span of 39 meters.

This is a nice track to follow but beware if you drive too far you hit a rough gravel road - yip we took that route! There are plenty of side roads which take you back to the Princes Highway!

Completely different scenic drive to what you would expect. You can not see the ocean along this route but overlook the Canunda National Park.
