Flinders Ranges #2

The following day we decided to head up to Leigh Creek in search of information regarding the Strezlecki Track. Leaving the station, we took the road heading through the Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges. Wow, this is some serious gorges dating back 530 -580 million years! The road takes you down into the river bed making you feel very small against the vast rock walls. Photos here do not show or do it justice as it is phenomenal. You also need to imagine the water gushing through the gorges where we are currently driving. There is no water mark visible on the gorge walls but from the remains of large trees in the river bed it must have a massive amount of strength when in full flood. It is also interesting to see many tree have had either their roots exposed from the erosion of the water or hollows being carved out of the trunks. Hard to imagine how the trees still remain standing especially those which appear to be very old.

During our driving tours we have been lucky enough to spot a few animals – kangaroos – grey, red and euro, Whistling Kite, Emu and of course one of our favourites the Wedge-tailed Eagle! We have had many a stop to try and capture the Wedgey in full swing – be prepared there could still be many more pics of them yet!

Rawnsley Park Station has some walking trails through some of the hills at the back of the caravan park and cabins. We decided to tackle one or two of the tracks on our last morning here. Leaving the park we headed first to the Kangaroo lookout. Following the Pines Cave trail we were headed to Alisons Saddle – 582 m at her highest! It was a pretty steep walk to the top but the views were amazing full 360 around the Flinders taking in the Chace, Wilpena, Rawnsley Bluff and then the view back towards Hawker. Poor Georgia has done nothing but sleep since we got back to the caravan to pack up as we are headed to Arkaroola before the Strezlecki Track.
