Leaving Tibooburra, we followed the Silvercity Highway towards Broken Hill where we would spend 4 days. The road out of town is sealed with breaks or gravel and reddirt and then seal again until you hit Pack Saddle some 90km away when it is sealed through to Broken Hill. The road itself was in pretty good condition however, our friend Mr Wind who has followed us every kilometer we have travelled and always head on was with us once again!
Any way, back to the Wedge Tail, as we were driving along, we would see in the distance an animal on the road and what looked to be crows and a couple of Wedge Tailed Eagles. With the noise of the car and caravan usually everything takes off. Not this eagle, do or die he was having his feed and we would just have to either take him out, go around him or stop! Given this isn’t Sydney and the highway wasn’t bummer to bummer, we were pretty safe!
I was able to open my door on the passenger side, lean out of the car and take lots of photo’s of him ripping apart what was leftover of the feast. It truly was amazing to see how powerful these birds are. We must have watched him for a good 10-15 minutes and he wasn’t going to move out of our way. In the end we started to move forward in the car and he just jumped onto the roadside to wait for us to move off.
